Concerns about global warming and the U.S. dependence on foreign oil are driving an historic shift from fossil fuels to biofuels and other types of renewable energy. Now more than ever it is important to focus on the benefits of a sustainable, local model for biodiesel in the United States in order to maintain local energy and economic security.
Biodiesel that is created and used locally can benefit the community in many ways:
-
Increase local economic security by creating and securing jobs in feedstock, production and distribution.
-
Increase the availability of locally produced renewable energy to maintain true energy security.
-
Reduce the negative impact on our environment both locally and globally.
-
Conserve energy by reducing the need to move fuel and even biodiesel feedstock thousands of miles.
In order for biofuels to achieve these goals, it is essential that biofuel production be done in an environmentally and socially responsible manner. Keeping the social and environmental impacts of feedstock, production and distribution in mind at all times.

The SBA is proud to introduce our new E.D. Jeff Plowman!
Greetings to all SBA members and supporters,
My name is Jeff Plowman and it is an honor to be the Executive Director of this important organization.
I first began experimenting with biodiesel in 2000, since that time I have worked in all aspects of the business and have witnessed the birth and amazing growth of an industry. Many of you may remember the days when there were very few equipment vendors or when agricultural commodities were not tied to energy markets. Our industry has grown dramatically and recklessly in the past five years. The race for the dollar has made the speculation for green gold part of a global biodiesel failure that threatens to derail the positive effects of the fuel. Now more than ever, we as a community need to come together to make a positive impact on the future of the biodiesel industry. We don’t get the industry we deserve; we get the industry that we fight for.
Today we have the great opportunity and responsibility to shape the future of the biodiesel industry. A certification program can help end users make informed decisions about the biodiesel they choose. It can help develop locally sourced supply chains for biodiesel production, supporting local businesses in the community, as well as creating new jobs. Best practice standards can reduce the impact on resources in the harvest, production and distribution of biodiesel, thereby creating a net gain for the environment and the community. You can help bring about change by becoming a member of the Sustainable Biodiesel Alliance. Check out the membership page and see how you can get involved to help create a better biodiesel industry with a sustainable future.
Sincerely,
Jeff Plowman
The Sustainable Biodiesel Alliance (SBA) is a non-profit organization created to promote sustainable biodiesel practices, including the harvesting, production and distribution of biodiesel fuels.
