The Benefits of Sustainable Community-Based Biodiesel
Concerns about global warming and the U.S. dependence on foreign oil are driving a historic shift from fossil fuels to biofuels and other types of renewable energy. Now more than ever it is important to focus on the benefits of a sustainable, local model for biodiesel in the United States in order to maintain local energy and economic security.
Biodiesel that is created and used locally can benefit the community in many ways:
-
Increase local economic security by creating and securing jobs in feedstock, production and distribution.
-
Increase the availability of locally produced renewable energy to maintain true energy security.
-
Reduce the negative impact on our environment both locally and globally.
-
Conserve energy by reducing the need to move fuel and even biodiesel feedstock thousands of miles.
In order for biofuels to achieve these goals, it is essential that biofuel production be done in an environmentally and socially responsible manner. Keeping the social and environmental impacts of feedstock, production and distribution in mind at all times.

U.S. Congress Extends Biodiesel Tax Credit |
U.S. President George W. Bush signed the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 into law Oct. 3 shortly after the U.S. House of Representatives passed the legislation with a 263 to 171 vote. The U.S. Senate approved the bill Oct. 1 by a vote of 74 to 25. The legislation, most widely known for bailing out the U.S. financial industry, also has important implications for the biodiesel industry.
In addition, the law closes the splash and dash loophole, which allowed foreign produced biodiesel to enter the United States, be splash blended to claim tax incentives, and then shipped to a third country for use. For more information on this story click here.

You can now travel from the Great Lakes to the Gulf Coast, entirely on biodiesel and ethanol, say officials from Alabama, Kentucky, Indiana and Tennessee, along with representatives from the federal Department of Energy, joined together to dedicate Interstate 65 as America’s first biofuels corridor.
This "biofuels corridor" will provide B20 and E85 to consumers at regular intervals. For more information on the Great Lakes to Gulf Coast Biofuel Corridor click here. |
